Two top aides of the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko escaped attacks yesterday from suspected gunmen in Akure.
The duo are LP’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ranti Akerele and Mimiko’s Special Assistant (SA) Dr. Pius Osunyikanmi.
While Akerele was reportedly attacked at his house around 1.30a.m, five gunmen crossed Osunyikanmi’s Toyota Camry salon car with the number plate KM836KJA around Oke-Ijebu.
He was said to have parked his car, jumped out and ran for safety.
Passers by were said to have arrested four of the suspected killers who are being detained at the Ijapo Police Station.
The gunmen are Adewusi Ifedayo, Ajayi Blessing, Dara Okunola and a lady who was arrested later at her hide-out.
They rode in a Toyota Nissan car with registration number Lagos BK446LSD. The two damaged cars were parked within the premises of the police station.
Akerele said the gunmen reportedly drugged one of his guard dogs.
As the other dog barked ceaselessly, members of the landlords association were said to have joined forces, in a bid to confront the attackers who bolted.
Akerele urged President Umar Yar’Adua, the state Police Commissioner and security agencies to stem the attack on the opposition.
A senior police officer who preferred anonymity confirmed the story. But the police image maker, Mr. Adeniran Aremu, said he had not been briefed.
