EFCC ACCUSES IBORI OF DELAY TACTICS

James Ibori

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has accused the embattled former governor of Delta State, Chief Onanefe Ibori, of employing tactics to delay his trial. He is being tried for alleged corruption and money laundering.

Counsel to EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs, held that the plea by Ibori for the court to stay proceedings pending the determination of the appeal against him should be dismissed by the court.

Jacobs also urged the court to proceed on hearing the case in the interest justice and fair hearing of the four accused persons, who have not appealed and are willing to stand trial in Kaduna State.

Meanwhile counsel to Ibori, Joseph Daudu, (SAN), argued that on the basis of the provision in Section 6c of the 1999 Constitution, the court should stay proceedings and further hearing of the case.

Dauda insisted that Ibori has every right to fair hearing and right to transfer the case to a judicial jurisdiction where the alleged offences were committed.

Justice Lawal Shuaibu adjourned till 8 May hearing on the application for stay of proceedings.
