AGIP DUMPS TOXIC WASTE IN EMU-UNOR --DELTA STATE
ABOUT 40 drums of chemicals suspected to be toxic waste, have been
deposited in Emu-Unor community in Delta State by the Nigerian Agip Oil
Company (NAOC), raising fear of threath to the lives of the residents
concerned citizens of the community have already petitioned the state
government and other agencies and called for the immediate evacuation of
the poisonous substance.
The community alleged that NAOC dumped 20 trailer load of the poison in a
pit and another 20 beside the pit on 3rd March, 2008 along the
Emu-Unor-Aabbi-Abraka road in Ndokwa West Council area of the state.
In the letter addressed to the Minister, Federal Ministry of Environment,
Housing and Urban Development; Commissioner for Environment, Delta State;
Speaker, DSHA and the Managing Director of NAOC counsel to the Emu-Unor
community and concerned citizens, Mr. Andrew Anowu, said the NAOC in
collaboration with a local contractor carried out the act without regard
for the lives of the people.
They therefore called on the all authorities concerned to urgently wade
into this matter to save them. They further alleged that the said
contractor and his cohorts are threatening the lives of all those fighting
the menance.
