Ondo LP cries out over plans to assassinate Mimiko and
several of its leaders

The Ondo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) on Thursday raised an alarm over what it described as plans by the government of the Dr Olusegun Agagu to assassinate its Flag bearer in the April 14 Governorship election, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and several of its leaders in the next few days.

LP also alleged that plans were on by the state government to engage on large scale violence and pin it on members of the party in order to attempt to discredit it and halt the popularity it currently enjoyed among the people of the State.

Dr Mimiko, former Minister of Housing and Urban Development , who is challenging the purported victory of Dr Agagu at the Election Petition Tribunal, according to a statement issued by its Director of Publicity, Mr. Kolawole Olabisi, in Akure, is top on the list of those to be eliminated by the Agagu government but which the party had just uncovered. According to the statement, LP stated that following the decision of Dr Mimiko to go to court to seek redress for the brazen manner in which the mandate freely given to him by the people of Ondo State on April 14 was stolen, he and members of the party had been under series of threat from Dr Olusegun Agagu and his acolytes.

“Time over time, we have told the whole world of plans by the Agagu led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State to foment trouble, attack members of the Tribunal who had been doing their job diligently masquerading and pin it all on our Party. When these failed because we were always abreast of their evil plots, Dr Mimiko was attacked; his home and that of his siblings were ransacked in the desperate quest to steal documents being used to prosecute our case at the Tribunal. This is aside from series of attacks on our members and notable leaders and their properties.

“Today, we have stumbled on a fresh plot to eliminate our leaders including Dr Mimiko and our party Chairman, Dr. Olaiya Oni, former Education Minister. The assassination will be made to look like armed robbery attacks.They are also planning a large scale violence using hired thugs waering LP veats and caps around the venue of the on-going trial at the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Akure in order to create tension and a seemingly general state of insecurity and scare the Judges out of Ondo state all in their bid to stall judgement ”

The party therefore called on the security agents in the State to be alert to the antics of the PDP and also ensure that adequate protection are given to Dr Mimiko and all its leaders. Further, it called on the President, Alhaji   Umar Musa Yar’Adua to as a matter of urgency call Agagu to order.

 “We are using this medium to call on the President and Commander-In –Chief of the Armed Forces, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, to come to our assistance in Ondo State. Enough of blood letting and attempted murder; the will of the people must be allowed to prevail. That, in our view, is the very essence of democracy not intimidation, harassment and cheap blackmail and outright murder.”
