Yar'Adua threatens to shut down AIT

…Summons Dokpesi over “Focus Nigeria”

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has threatened to revoke the operational license of Africa Independent Television, AIT over what officials described as “threat to national security” from the stations talk program “Focus Nigeria.”

Sequel to this threat, AIT boss, Raymond Dokpesi directed that Aruleba be removed, and the contents of the program about government policies tilted in the administration’s favor.

Sources told pointblanknews.com that Dopkesi who was summoned to the Presidential Villa hurriedly made the change to avoid another visit from security operatives. The AIT was invaded some time last year, and the same Aruleba whisked away by SSS agents over an interview he had with Senator Joseph Waku.

Last week the program had a new host, Tunde Adewale.

“Focus Nigeria” a popular talk show program which was introduced by the station in January 2006 runs from 10.00am to 11.00am Monday to Friday x-rays issues in Nigeria and anchored by Gbenga Mike Aruleba.

Presidency sources say the Program is considered too critical of the Government of President Yar’Adua, even though government officials are often invited to defend policies.

Pointblanknews.com gathered that the Chairman and CEO of the television station, Chief Raymond Dokpesi was few days ago invited by the Presidency where he was roundly rebuked and accused of using his television station to “misinform and incite the Nigerian people against the administration of President Yar’Adua.”

Sources within the Presidential Villa told pointblanknews.com that the President was visibly angry that he promised to ensure that the Station is not just shut down but its operational license and the Television rights it was granted to air the FIFA U-17 World Cup equally revoked.

According to a source “the president gave them conditions which include stopping the program, changing the anchorman or losing their operational license and this time the president is very serious because this is not the first time he has complained about AIT.”

The source added that the President was particularly piqued by the way and manner the Program anchorman, Aruleba conducts the program and the types of comments and innuendos used during the program which tend to characterize the Yar’Adua’s presidency inept and corrupt.

Aruleba is not new to arrest and controversy. On June 14, 2006, operatives of the State Security Service (SSS), Nigeria's intelligence agency, invaded the premises of the country's largest private television network, (AIT), in Abuja and arrested Aruleba.

Initially, it was not clear why Aruleba was arrested as it was believed to be connected with an interview he granted a former senator, Joseph Waku, which was aired on the "Focus Nigeria" program the previous day, June 13.  Senator Waku had harshly criticized the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo during the interview.

Aruleba was released conditionally late on June 15 after he reportedly embarked on a hunger strike to protest his detention, but was asked to report back to the SSS office on  June 19.

On 14 May 2006, SSS agents raided the same Abuja office of AIT and seized the master tape of a 30-minute documentary advert on failed attempts by various past Nigerian heads of state to prolong their tenure in office.  Nigeria's National Assembly was then debating a controversial proposal to amend the 1999 Constitution in order, among other things, to extend the tenure of the President and state governors by a further four years.

This is another military junta in disguise which rules with autocratically regimented approaches and compulsory order. What happened to right to freedom of speech? If this ailing president cannot cope with governance pressure, let him go back to Kastina and possibly enjoy the little he has legitimately and illegally acquired. BEWARE! BEWARE!! BEWARE!!! We are almost at the door, who? Young clearly and focusly minded Nigerians who will not set up 7 point agenda but will attend to and tackle all possible agenda. Gbenga M. Aruleba, dont be disheartnen, quiter never win. How can the president condition the operation of a TV station, ridiculous, Unthinkable absolutely absurd.

This is unacceptable, we cannot rebrand Nigeria this way, let AIT and other independent media outfits be.

wherether this govt accepts it or not, mr gbenga has made a good name for himself and majority of nigerians will attest to this fact. the like of nuhu ribadu etc are hereos in our eyes today like gbenga arulegba.the truth is always bitter to the few that has pepetually kept us where we are today. e.g is it not true that nigeria is the 13th amongst the failed states in the world today, the 3rd most corrupt in the world, amongst the listed poorest countries with per capita income of less than 1200 dollars per head etc. history will surely vindicate the like of gbenga and others

Yar'Adua and Free speech.

Recently, Fox cable news has been harshly critical of Obama administration and there is no name on the book that has never been attached to Obama, yet the good government of Obama has not threatened Fox cable news; this is democracy and free speech in action. The press is there to watch the excesses of any government anywhere in the world. Tyranny and dacrony are in the human flesh; if there is no opposition, which is flatly absent in Nigeria, then the press is the guardian of the people, but when this fourth realm is muzzled down, then we are in the worst shape.

If you are misquoted or unsavoring piece wriiten against you or broadcast against you, all you need to do is to counter it in the same media and like Fox, 'we report, the public judges". No government should threaten to withdraw the operating license of any broadcasting media unless such a government is fascist, tyrannical, despotic, undemocratic and far removed from the ruled like the government of Yar'Adua. Nigeria always copy the wrong ideals from USA and other western world, but the good ideals, they throw out because we have no government of the people by the people and for the people.

Silencing the AIT is conquering Nigeria and RETAINING THE STATUS QUO. For the fact that there is no democracy in Nigeria, the peoples' votes cannot count and that is why the successive government in Nigeria does what it likes since they will always rig themselves in anything anywhere. My question is this, is that Yar'Adua's rule of law mantra? If he is agrieved of Areluba's broadcast, let them go to court to challenge AIT and not threaten to close AIT. Democracy is not yet in Nigeria, poor Nigerians.

it is shame that the federal goverment of nigeria is doing what military dictatorship are accused of doing. well if the president felt that the programm is spreading false information i think that he will channel his anger to the court and seek redress there not arresting or intimadating the owner plus the program host. we should respect the rule of law the president is making the host of the programm where he was critized a hero and by arresting him and threatning the owner it makes him looks corrupt. we are in a civilized world so my advice is for the pesident to release all those in detention that criticize him and seek redress in nigerian court thats why we have judiciary.

I totally agree with the removal of the anchor man ‘Gbenga Mike Aruleba’ i have watched this programme on numerous occasion and found Gbenga biased , raw, unpolished and inexperienced..........the talk show most of the time is about his own views, he seem to bully participants to accepting his views.........Please bring on young dynamic graduates........

Posted By Gani on 2009-10-25

Ola your comments about Gbenga Aruleba is mischievious and far from the truth, I am a fan of Focus Nigeria and always watch the program, Gbenga has been soft on the government to the extent that when viewers call he tried to soften their comments on the government or in some cases cut the speaker short or even cut off the connection. I dont know which part of the world you live, I will advise you to read the comments of Chukwuma Iwanyanwu then you will know better that constructive criticism is best way for any wise government to look backwards and see where it has stumble, in a civilized environment, where democracy thrives, a country with a leader who has the love of his citizens will never boast to shut down a media house. I am beginning to see you as a sympathizer for tyranny, dictatorship and corruption, wake up and imbibe righteousness, it exalts a nation. Polices that are unrealistic, unreal, fake and deceptive need not be praised but rejected. Ola do you watch CNN, Aljazeera, Press TV and other media houses that are confrontational in their reports whether right or wrong but they are not threaten or do you think they are all owned by Governments. Do you want to live in perpetual deception? The choice is yours

this is purely injustice, this is a program most people don't like missing bcos it give the ordinary Nigerian hope.Allah ya isa'a

This is to show you the level of corruption we have in this country, Does the presidency think that by intimedation it will achieve its goal? we are all aware that the Government is totally corrupt and there is no way we can hide that, what is democracy when one cannot air his or her view be it TV or radio the country is going backwards and i am very sorry for this country.

Posted By lawrence on 2009-10-26

let yaradua shame his critics by performing.even if all news media - tv, radio stations, news papers houses etc are shut down we all no that his government is not performing, because he who feel it knows it all,i feel it,no drinking water,no electricity, bad road ,insecurity, unemployment, etc these are the halmarks of a non performing government.

This is high handedness on the part of president Yar'Adua. Why should a television station be threatened with closure or revokation of its licence all because of a programme done by the station. This is unacceptable in the 21st century. Yar'Adua needs to be exposed and be educated on how so many print and television media houses criticise Gordon Brown here on daily basis. The president's action portrays him as somebody that do not want the truth to be told. A civilized & progressive President would be open minded to criticism.

Well for me personally, the program FOCUS NIGERIA is a good and nice one.It serves every Nigeria both home and abroad by airing their views and comments. I think what the AIT media is doing is what I called CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISISM. The Government should have seen it as way of working harder for the contry and its citizes.

For Gbenga, don't relent. Wherever you find yourself, make your impact. I'm sure you will excel. ENEMIES OF THE NATION SHALL LEAVE US HERE. GOD IS WATCHING.

Very soon the whole of Nigerians would have been denied their right to know and may depend on cyberspace for information about themselves. Although some bloggers are even gagging their audience citing language used as excuse for not publishing them. We are sure neither the executive nor the legislature in this regime will allow the Freedom of Information Bill become law because they have a couple of skeletons in their cupboards. Well with the new courage from the courts and the anti graft agencies, the chicken is nearing home to roost. At the appropriate time the people will do what they need do to protect their own rights. AIT cannot be shut unless we the people of Nigeria allow it.

I honestly dont think yar adua understands what democracy represents.....he keep shouting the rule of law when at the same time he cannot stand a mere criticism of his OFF ROAD/BLIND AND STUPID style of governance. A full dictator.....Mr yar adua, you think you can deprive Nigerians from critisising ur blind/go slow goverment, by banning FOCUS NIGERIA?, thank God there are other medium which Nigerians all over the world cld express how sick and tired they are with ur so=called, mafioso styled system you call democracy, i call it demostration of craze/crazy demostration. You just murdered sleep....if only you know how good nigerians all over appreciates that programm that you and ur cohorts have just taken off air. And Mr AIT, am sure went on his kneels when he was summoned to Aso rock....offcourse he wldnt want to go hungry. Dont worry Gbenga, Nigerians are firmly behind you.....pack ur bags and join the likes of NUHU RIBADU,EL RUFAI, DELE ATURU, SAHARA REPORTERS AND CO, continue ur fight outside...Nigerians in diaspora will give you a proper platform to do what you love to do, rather than remain in that thing called Nigeria. You dont need anybody to tell you....the goverment hates you so very much, because they cannot stand the truth. Millions of Nigerians are firmly behind you, and there should be no stopping you. KEEP THE FIRE BURNING GBENGA.

It is only those who are not performing that would always be afraid of innuandoes and negative comments. Instead of the man who was installed into unmerited office to attempt to carve a niche for himself, he is busy looking for the press to persecute. He first started it with The Leadership Newspapers and Channels TV. So we wont be surprised if he carries out his threat of revoking the operating licence of the TV station. It is already a known secret that we are dealing with a lion in sheeps clothing in Aso Rock. One day, we would be free by the grace of God. Aruleba can resign if he has the gut. He cannot go hungry.

FOCUS NIGERIA is a good programme and should not be allowed to die like POINT BLANK of NTA. Government should allow constructive critisms. It helps to checkmate it's officials. Praise singing is not always the best except it is a government that does not want to better the problems of it's citizens.

FOX news of America critises OBAMA's govt. with reckless abandon and Obama has not threatened them.
We should know that critism is part of democracy just like Gov Amaechi said the other day. Because the same praise singers will bring you down once you are out of corridors of power as it is happening to former golden Gov of Rivers state.
PLS ALLOW FOCUS NIGERIA TO BE! It is a good programme, it is expository, it is informative and it is educating.

Sincerely Gbenga Aruleba was becoming to arrogant. There was a time I as a person has to get his personal line to to intimate him about misconspcetion about some persons and even facts about Ondo state where claimed the Ilajes are the only people in Ondo state that produces oil. I make him realise that The Arogbo Ijo of Ese-Odo LGA too are Oil producing community there, He bluntly told me he knows what he was talking about. He is too arrogant to be the moderator of the programme. He should take a cue from the likes of Yori Folarin of TV Continental, Chaberlin Osoh and his crew in Channels TV or even Kunle Adewale went he was presenting Kaakaki these are viewers delight. These are presenters that are humbly.

Posted By toyin on 2009-10-28

This is a sad and uncomfortable development for me. I watched focus nigeria everyday 'cos of the way Mr Aruleba present it, Since kunle Adewale started presenting it believe you me i did not find it interesting again, Mr Aruleba a vibrant nigerian, a great man wanting to see a changed nigeria. Now Yaradua idiot, senseless, focusless, dirty, sickler etc. i don't know what to call him again now thought he has silenced him, Mr Aruleba you are not silenced you have just started and God will show you the way to go and he will lead you and guide you. To you yaradua or what do you call your name by God's grace you will be disgraced, shame will be your portion and your family in Jesus name. you Believe you can pour cold water on this burning fire, the more you pour the water the more the fire. Idiot, useless fellow. Yaradua go back to kastina nothing is working in Nigeria whether you allow us to state our views or not Nigerians will not forgive you for this that you have done.

I'm definitely not a fan of Mr President, but i think it's wrong,SINFUL,disrespectful to call him names, rain curses on him et al.He's undeniably wrong with the action he took.but i look forward to a time when the presidency will not have the power to enforce a directive against the pple's wish.Truth is ...in this naija wey we dey so,dem fit close AIT tomorrow o.nothing like rule of law.it only exists when the presidency doesnt stand to lose anything. My folks, naa make God intervene in the state called NIGERIA.

THis is yet another illustration of the type of democracy we have in Nigeria...its puzzling on a couple of levels..
1, The presss is supposed to be free? If National Security is not compised what is Yar Aduas problem? Everyone and but he knows how inept, corrupt and hopeless his administration is. Aruleba & co are just highlighting what is comon knowledge..

2, Where are Dokpesi's journalistic principles? Why is he running scared after being threatened by YarAdua? The man obvuosly which side is bread is buttered..Sad day for Journalism..sad day for freedom

Yar'Adua should be reminded that only tyrants resort to threats and intimidation. If he feels riled he can go to court. After all, he is a disciple of the rule of law. FOR EVERY CRITIC YOU SILENCE, HUNDREDS MORE WILL RISE UP. The emergence of critical voices in adverse situations is as sure as 99 precedes 100. On this there can be no doubt.

It will be a futile effort. Yar'Adua who pretends to be an apostle of the rule of law can resort to intimidation and blackmail to achieve an evil objective? This is a confirmation that Absolute power corrupts absolutely. However, he should know that when one critic is silenced, ten more are raised.

President Yar'Adua's threat on AIT is most unfortuante in a democratic life of Rule of Law. However, let it be said that Gbenga Aruleba is not the Obasanjo's that plunged this country into her abyss and should be treated with respect therefore. Gbenga, like the AIT is only reviewing the state of the nation with a view to provoking a solution, rather than rebranding our iniquities in sheer pretence and shameless failures.

This is a set back for Nigeria. We are being held to ransom by group of people who do not have the interest of Nigeria at heart. Focus Nigeria is a ray of hope for Nigeria with Aruleba as the presenter. He seeks to deepen democracy in Nigeria by holding our leaders to account and in so doing educating the public. Unfortunately the government is running scare of the growing awareness in the country of the illicit activities of our self appointed leaders. He is a patriot and this can not be said about our current bunch of imbecile leaders. The punitive behaviour toward Aruleba was designed to suppress the truth and create fear that will in turn stifle democracy in Nigeria. They will never succeed – it shows how shallow those responsible are in this information age. Time is running out for them, I hope they will change direction from the path of destruction.
I believe Aruleba is destined for greater things and the current situation can only propel him to a greater height in his career.
I have now boycotted AIT and so also my friends. Success is a matter of choice; AIT has made the wrong choice.
Time will tell.

My people!!! its no suprise to me the President intend to shut down AIT for allowing Eminent Nigerias to air their views on the political misadventures of our greedy and heartless politicians our mother land has produced. The question pondering the mind of well meaningful Nigerians is do we really understand the meaning of the word 'democracy'? Barack Obama at his last visit to China said that the only way a government can determine how good or bad its policies are is to allow freedom of speech. Yaradua's government to me is 'Military men' in white 'Agbada uniform'.
