Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, has been arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC, over her role in the controversial N100million fundraiser, which she and her group claimed was meant to support the candidacy of Barack Obama, U.S Democratic presidential hopeful.
Onyiuke was arrested in Abuja on Wednesday , following a petition written to the EFCC by the authorities of the SEC. She is currently under the custody of the EFCC.
Femi Babafemi, EFCC spokesperson, confirmed arrest.
Few days ago, the Obama campaign dissociated itself from Okereke-Onyuike and her co-travellers.Staff counsel for Obama For America, Kendall Burma said “ We want to confirm that Obama For America Inc,, which is the principal campaign committee for senator Obama,…is no way affiliated with this event or with this organization..we will not accept any funds raised at this event or through the fund raising activities of the group”
The Security and Exchange Commission(SEC), had also asked her to explain her role in the scam. The Director-General, Musa Al Faki said “ you are no doubt aware that your status as the CEO of NSE is both sensitive and non partisan…you are therefore requested to clarify your role in the “ Africa For Obama ‘ campaign”
Okereke-Onyiuke recently organized a fund raising, N2.5million per plate dinner in Lagos to raise funds for Obama. Individuals paid N325,000 per plate. At that dinner, which attracted captains of Industry, over N100million According to her, the money is meant to mobilize support for Obama and sponsor some people to the democratic convention later this month.
Sequel to criticisms by the media and concerned citizens, the NSE boss gave a twisted explanation that reeks of arrogance and class disregard for public office ethics.
She said “ At no time did we say we are raising money for Obama, what we are saying is that Obama is for the world and he has been getting support all over the world,Nigeria should not be left out”
