The Labour Party (LP) in Ondo State has cried out to the law enforcement
agencies over fresh plans by the Dr Olusegun Agagu-led government to
unleash terror in the State with the employment of some thugs to foment
trouble in the riverine areas of the State from today to create a chaotic
situation that would prevent the Tribunal from ruling against it in the
petition filed against Agagu’s victory at the April 14, 2007 election by
Dr Olusegun Mimiko of the LP.
LP, which noted in a release issued by its Director of Press, Mr. Kolawole
Olabisi on Wednesday in Akure that this latest threat to the peace of Ondo
State by the Governor was coming on the heel of a failed attempt by Agagu
to use a non-existent Niger Delta militant which he named Coastal
Vigilante Force to scare the Tribunal two weeks ago.
According to LP, the Governor’s younger brother, Femi Agagu, who also
doubles as his Chief of Staff in company of the Secretary to the State
Government, Isaac Kekemeke; Femi Johnson Jila, Albert Adetoye, Chairman of
Irele Local Government Council, among others on Monday held a meeting with
some thugs of Arogbo Ijaw and Ilaje extraction who are into illegal oil
bunkering in the oil-rich Southern District in Akure.
“At the meeting, these people who had hitherto been sent out of the
illegal oil business shortly before the April 14, 2007 election on the
order of Dr Agagu who accused some of them of being LP financiers were
asked to go back to their illicit trade but with a proviso: ‘Go to the
press with inflammatory paid advertisements and hand bills warning that
blood will flow in Ondo State should the election in the entire southern
district is annulled and Mimiko is declared as Governor of the State by
the Tribunal’. Government also gave them an undertaken to underwrite
their expenses as well as assure them of adequate protection from the
law.”
LP, therefore, in saying that this plan which is already on should not be
taken with levity by the relevant security agencies who should ensure that
it is investigated and thwarted.
Says Olabisi: “What is more, a couple of weeks ago, the same Agagu
government raised the alarm that some militants had threatened to disrupt
the peace of the State if Agagu’s so-called election was thrown out. We
have incontrovertible evidence that the Press Release supposedly emanating
from the non-existent group of militants was written and circulated by the
Governor’s Office. We have communicated this as appropriate to the
security forces who we expect to do their work on this massive evidence of
desperation and lack of patriotism on the part of those currently in
charge in Ondo State thus this latest breach of the security of the State
he is suppose to protect by Dr Agagu in his desperation to continue to
hang unto a mandate which was not given to him by the people of Ondo State
should be taken with all seriousness.”
