“Quit Playing Tricks with Anambra North Senatorial Seat”, Lagos AC Tells Senate Leadership.
The Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress has lambasted the Senate over its flagrant disregard for the laws of the land by its continued retention of Senator Joy Emordi as the senator representing the Anambra North senatorial constituency when she had been relieved of the mandate by the Court of Appeal. The party warns that democracy, even in the fitful state it is practiced in Nigeria, is doomed if the leadership of the senate believes it will continue playing tricks on the system for the selfish interest of a few.
In a release in Lagos, signed by the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the AC, Joe Igbokwe, Lagos AC said that so far, there is no legal impediment against the swearing in of the ANPP candidate, Alphonsus Igbeke, who was declared the winner of the senatorial seat by the Appeal tribunal. It says that what stand against the rightful assumption of seat by the ANPP candidate is the rabid interests of a few people in the senate who are now indulging in a filthy trifling with the laws of the land so as to scoop selfish interests.
“As a party, we state that democracy stands on the rule of law and even when certain options do not elevate the narrow interests of some operators; they must ensure that nothing is done to take advantage of the system for narrow ends. What the senate leadership is doing at present amounts to inventing expedient reasons to flout the constitution and the ANPP is the primary victim of this larceny.
“Lagos AC sees no conflict between the legislations of the Appeal tribunal in both the petition of the Labour Party and that of the ANPP to warrant this indecent act of lawlessness by the senate leadership. We only observe that the senate leadership invents the present impasse just to ensure the ANPP candidate is prevented from assuming his position in the senate and we warn that the country will not survive these types of dirty maneuvers.
“We call on all Nigerians of good will to rise up strongly against the present manipulation by the senate leadership. We want all to see the dangers in this type of desperate game that rides roughshod over the constitution of the country. We want Nigerians to rise in one voice to condemn this deliberate attempt to subvert the rule of law so as to reward the personal interests of the senate leadership. We want all Nigerians to join hands together and stop this act of reckless impunity on the constitution and urge all to be steadfast until Joy Emordi is forced to give way to Igbeke, the rightful owner of the mandate.”
