The Bayelsa State governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, has promised to abide by the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to conduct a fresh gubernatorial primary election in his state, confident that he would emerge victorious at the end of the day.
Fielding questions from correspondents when he led a delegation of shipyard investors to President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday, he said the party was supreme and, therefore, he would tag along with whatever the PDP decided.
The acting national chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, had announced that there would be fresh gubernatorial primaries in Bayelsa, Kogi, Sokoto, Cross River and Adamawa states, following a court decision to stop the last April elections in the states, on the ground that the tenure of the governors had not expired.
Baraje had argued that the party’s decision was in line with its commitment to due process and a fulfillment of the guidelines in the Electoral Act, to guarantee genuine internal democracy in the party.
According to Timipre, “the party is supreme. Whatever the party says, we are going to abide by and I want to assure you that I have no worries at all. As long as I have the right endorsement, I assure you that I am going to win. Right now, I can assure that I have the right endorsements.” |
