Gov. Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State has stressed the need for Nigerian leaders to subscribe to accountability and transparency to enhance the enthronement of good governance at every level of government.
Speaking when he received a delegation of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), led by its Chairman, Hajiya Hadiza Ibrahim, he said ``those entrusted with leadership positions at all levels should be ready to be open to the people and obey financial rules and regulations.
``Unless these virtues are imbued by leaders, there will continue to be bad governance which will lead to poor delivery or non-delivery of the much desired dividends of democracy to the people.''
Wamakko said the state government had restructured its accounting system in line with the prevailing global standards, while accounting staff had also been trained locally and abroad to enhance their capacities.
He promised to continue to assist the association in the discharge of its responsibilities, which he noted, had contributed to the nation’s socio-economic development.
Ibrahim had earlier told the governor that the association was religiously monitoring the performance of its members in both the public and private sectors.
``Transparent public officers are required to add value to good governance, while good corporate governance leads to the provision of dividends of democracy.''
She commended the governor for having competent and reliable officials in his administration, which would enable him to have a very good report card to show at the end of his tenure. (NAN) |
