Cancer: Mrs John Edwards has few weeks to live, as doctors stop treatment
Elizabeth Edwards is seriously ill and doctors say further treatment for her cancer would be unproductive.
The family issued a statement Monday that revealed her doctors' diagnosis. It said she is resting at home with family and friends.
The wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards posted on her Facebook page that she can't express the love and gratitude she feels to those who've supported and inspired her. She wrote "the days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered."
The 61-year-old Elizabeth Edwards separated from her husband after he admitted to an extramarital affair. She has battled breast cancer since 2004.Elizabeth Edwards's cancer took a turn for the worse when it metastasized to the liver. "Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive. She is resting at home with family and friends," the Edwards family says in a statement to People.
Edwards, estranged wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, posted a Facebook message to her friends.
"I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope," she writes. "These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that."
Edwards, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2004, was briefly hospitalized last week after not feeling well over Thanksgiving.
