PDP divided over Yar'Adua

Following the failing health of its Presidential Candidate, a crack appear imminent within the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP as members are now divided over whether Musa Yar’Adua should be dropped as PDP’s presidential flag bearer.

Yar’Adua, 56, who has been suffering from kidney problems recently collapsed and was rushed to a hospital in Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt, Germany while preparing for a campaign rally in Abuja, the commercial capital of Nigeria.

The party had quickly dismissed that the Presidential flag bearer’s health was failing insisting that he merely went to Germany for his routine medical check as directed by his personal physician. But some members of the party and some governors believe on health ground, the PDP presidential candidate should be dropped to allow for a healthier candidate who can stand the rigors of the campaign.

Pointblanknews.com learnt from some party sources that a governor from the South-South is spear-heading the agitation for the substitution of Yar’Adua and has started mobilizing others including members considered as PDP young Turks.

President Olusegun Obasanjo, it was learnt, was hinted on the move but dismissed it, insisting that nobody can change the Yar’Adua as the party’s flag bearer. The decision of the President did not go down well with some members who it was learnt are reconsidering their support for the party’s presidential candidate.

Some members who spoke to Pointblanknews.com com on condition of anonymity feared that the party might loose the presidential election if a healthier candidate is not presented to match the campaign train of opposition parties like the Action Congress led by Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, led by Muhamadu Buhari.

It was learnt that members opposed to Yar’Adua over health ground are also considering pressuring him to withdraw from the race upon his return back to Nigeria from Germany.
