Academic Qualification: Court To Hear Case Against Custom Boss Nov 27
Federal High Court has fixed November 27, to commence hearing into the case brought by a pressure group, seeking to compel President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua to sack the Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Buba Gyang, over alleged forgery in his (Gyang) claimed academic qualifications.
Justice Babs Kuewumi in whose court the matter was being heard, fixed the date and directed the plaintiffs to issue hearing notices to all the defendants named in the suit.
Already, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offenses Commission [ICPC] has filed a memorandum of appearances in the case through its counsel, Barrister E. Ezeani.
The group operating under the name, Voice of the Electorate [VOTE], based their action on allegations that Alhaji Gyang does not posses the requisite academic qualifications for the position of Comptroller General of Customs.
In addition, the pressure group is asking the court to compel the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice (AGF) and the heads of anti-corruption agencies to commence criminal proceedings against the Comptroller General over allegations of corrupt practices.
The Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice as well as that of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] and Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission [ICPC] are to be directed by an order of the court to freeze the accounts and assets of the Custom Boss, should the case succeed.

This was part of the reliefs sought in the suit as filed by the Project Director of the group, Barrister Nonso Ezika, on behalf of the association
In a 15-paragraph affidavit sworn to by Mr. Nonso Ezika, VOTE averred that the Comptroller of Customs holds a certificate in Insurance contrary to the minimum qualification of a bachelor degree for appointment as Customs Superintendent.
According to the group, “this singular academic deficiency has seen him pitched against more qualified officers whom he victimizes and dismisses at will.”
The group further alleged that “Gyang lacks the requisite moral fiber, uprightness of character, transparency in financier matters to administer a financial hub of the standing of the Nigerian Customs Services at this stage of the country’s fight against corruption.”
