BAIL: COURT WANTS UWAZURIKE TO PRODUCE MOTHER’S DEATH CERTIFICATE
Ruling on Chief Ralph Uwazurike’s bail application was stalled again today in Abuja as the presiding judge requested for a copy of the MASSOB leader’s mother’s death certificate.
In his quest for bail, the MASSOB leader told the court that as the only surviving son of the late Chief Mrs. Eunice Nneoma Uwazuruike, he has some funeral rites to perform before his mum would be buried according to the cultural practice of his community.
He also told the court that his mum who passed on recently was yet to be buried since no one else can perform those rites.
The recent Judges Conference held in Abuja stalled ruling on the bail application before today.
At the resumed hearing this morning, the presiding judge, Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako of the federal high court reserved her ruling on the bail application pending when the Death Certificate issued in respect of Uwazuruike’s mum’s death will be made available to her.
She also requested for a detailed report on the nature of the rites expected to be performed by the detained MASSOB leader before her ruling will be delivered.
Subsequently, the ruling was adjourned till next week pending when these conditionalities would be complied with.

In a move aimed at expressing the displeasure of the continued detention of Uwazuruike, the South East Senators in the National Assembly, who paid a solidarity visit to Uwazuruike at the prison premises gave President Umar Yar’dua hard knocks over the continued detention of the MASSOB leader.
Spokesman to the group, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, decried the incarceration of the non violent Uwazuruike while violent militants and area boys are prowling the streets of the nation freely.
According to the senator, “We came here in respect of the petition we sent to the AGF in relation to Uwazuruike where we pleaded to the Government to release Uwazuruike on the most liberal terms as the man is non violent in his operations.”
He also reaffirmed their confidence in the courts to accord the MASSOB leader justice.
