Sacked Oyo LG Chairmen Send SOS To Yar'Adua

The chairmen of the dissolved executives of the 33 local governments in Oyo State have sent a distress call to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to rescue the state from the reign of terror.

A statement on Tuesday by the chairmen, under the aegis of Association of Local Government of Nigeria, said the President must act now before the state was plunged into anarchy.

The Chairman of Oluyole Local Government Area, Mr. Kehinde Olaosebikan, on behalf of the sacked ALGON members, said the President must set in motion processes that would lead to lasting peace in the country.

In a related development, the state chapter of the Action Congress has condemned the state police command for its failure to stem the tide of violent attacks on lives and property in the state.

A separate statement by the Publicity Secretary of the Caretaker Committee of the AC, Mr. Wole Arisekola, described the attack on worshippers at a church in Ibadan during a Sunday service as “cowardly and uncivilised.”

Similarly, the state’s former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adebayo Shitu, condemned the unrelenting attack on members of the political camp of the former Governor, Alhaji Rashidi Ladoja.

It will be recalled that between Sunday and Monday several houses and vehicles belonging to the loyalists of Ladoja were either torched or vandalised in different parts of the state by unknown assailants.

The unhealthy rivalry between the two factional members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the state, who had delved into partisan politics, had compounded the problem.

While the faction being led by Alhaji Lateef Akinsola, a.k.a. Tokyo, had pitched tent with the Peoples Democratic Party, being led by Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, the other faction being led by Alhaji Wasiu Abubakre, is known to be routing for Ladoja.

In an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, the former commissioner said the President should act fast before the victims of the attacks resort to self help.
