Senate Presidency: Obasanjo Abandons David Mark ...As IBB Backs Aliyu

Immediate past Nigeria President, Olusegun Obasanjo is fast reconciling himself with life after power. He is being administered a dose of the same medicine he served those who got him into power. Abandonment. The soon-to-be inaugurated National Assembly may have concluded plans to throw back on the face of the erstwhile president his priced choice for the leadership of the Nigerian legislature retired Brigadier-General David Mark.

Endorsing Senator Mark is one of the obvious political gaffes that the former President made in recent times. For one, Obasanjo asked for too much in trying to present a candidate for the National Assembly having successfully muscled his way through in foisting President Umaru Ya’Ardua on Nigerians.

The legislature is still not recovered from crises of instability that dogged it for the most part while Obasanjo was President. Returning Senators and new colleagues feel that Obasanjo’s handover is good riddance.

Senator Mark is seen as a bundle of leadership contradictions and joke that Obasanjo desperately decided to foist on Nigerians.

This past weekend, facts emerged that Senator Mark, a clear well known pro-third term Senator and militarist during the traumatic years of coups and counter coups is yet to repent of his past. Millions of Pound Sterling whose source can be ostensibly traced to funds pilfered from Nigeria’s tax payers and public coffers were found in trust funds said to have been established by Senator Mark for his children. A duly constituted court in London has since ordered the money frozen because of Mark’s marital problems with his wife of four kids.

Obasanjo made a volte-face concerning his endorsement of Senator Mark knowing that the hand writings were clear. Obasanjo’s well known adversary and former military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida has anointed another returning Senator, Nuhu Aliyu from Niger State.

Obasanjo is said to be of the thinking that as a man grows older so does his propensity for waging wars dwindles. He is said to have decided to stave off further confrontation from Babangida.

It was learnt that Obasanjo is of the know that Mark’s very vocal campaign for his third term which was highly perfidious and unconstitutional is now here to haunt every Senator that actively participated in that conspiracy. The former President simply figures that a good General should not do a battle that is clearly doomed to fail.

Sources informed Pointblanknews that the aloof postures of President Yar’Adua on who becomes the Senate President is a course of worry for the former President who feels that without genuine support coming from his successor, the bid to get Senator mark the Senate Presidency job would become elusive.

Former Senate President Ken Nnamani had in his valedictory speech advised that the new Senate should be allowed to produce its leadership. Nnamani’s position had the tacit support of President Yar’Adua who is willing to allow for an independent legislature.
