WAMPANA'S SO-CALLED EXPULSION, ILL-TIMED
BY: EMMANUEL Y. KWACHE
Recently, some miscreants who call themselves politicians in Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State went to the press purportedly expelling political stalwart Senator Paul Wampana from the Peoples Democratic Party in his ward. What came to my mind when I read the so-called expulsion on the pages of newspapers is mere mischief and it defies logic for those nonentities to expel Senator Paul Wampana from a party.
Whosoever is the brain behind the action of those boys must have miscalculated and missed the point as well.Senator Paul Wampana has been in politics for than thirty years now.He started politics in 1977 when people mounted pressure on him to join the defunct Great Nigeria Peoples Party[GNPP] and a few years later he contested to the Gongola State House of Assembly and he won overwhelmingly. From that time, there was no looking back for the charismatic vibrant politician who later became speaker of the former Gongola State House of Assembly for four good years.
Paul Wampana is an old war horse, very indomitable, indefatigable and irrepressible. He has supporters from Gwoza in Borno State to Kashimbilla in Southern tip of Taraba State.Beyond this he is a gladiator,a compassionate individual who is a grassroot politician and with his people.Whosoever must have sponsored those boys to go the media to embarrass Senator Paul Wampana has goofed. When Senator Paul Wampana sneezes,a whole Empire catches cold
Let us review past incidents to show how powerful he was and how he is still very powerful today, because of his generosity. When the Paul Wampana left the Great Nigeria Peoples Party in 1983 due to in-fighting and dwindling fortunes of the party and moved to the National Party of Nigeria, the NPN formed Government in Gongola State.Ask Alhaji Bamanga Muhammad Tukur, the power Senator Paul Wampana wields, when it comes to real politicking. He later became Minister of State for Health.Wherever Paul Wampana moves to the whole place will be shaken For the Government in Adamawa State,it is foolishness for them to instigate hoodlooms to insult and embarrass an elder because he disagreed with their style of governance.
During the Paul Wampana Commission at the beginning of the civilian administration in 1999,every was flabbergasted at what Distinguished Senator Paul Wampana unearthed and how previous military regimes plundered Adamawa State. He does not fear anybody.Paul Wampana is loved by the fear people because of his fearlessness, courage and closeness to the people.
He never contested any post and lost either.Remember during General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida¢s failed transition between 1990 and 1993,Paul Wampana coasted home victoriously to become the senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District on the ticket of National Republican Conventiion.
From then till tomorrow,Senator Paul Wampana¢s voice will ever be heard beyond the spheres of Adamawa State. The loss of Professor Jubril Aminu and Vice-Admiral Murtala Nyako in Adamawa State because of unprincipled and inexperienced advisers has pushed Senator Paul Wampana into the camp of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.Imagine apart from the riff-raffs in Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, even Aminu Iyawa, who is supposed to be knowledgeable politically and said to be media adviser to Governor Nyako, instead of calling for truce and dialogue, misfired by calling Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.Senator Paul Wampana and Chief Medan Teneke names in his ADAMAWA STATE AND THE ENEMIES WITHIN,published in the Leadership Newspaper on Sunday November 23,2008,page 16.
Politics is all about give and take.It is not about other persons being a second class citizen and others, first class or others, this religion and others, the other religion.Let us de-emphasise those things that divide us and promote those things that unite us.Let us emulate Atiku Abubaka, inspite of his vast wealth and wide connections, does not use them to intimidate and harass innocent citizens. We should be able to manage success at whatever level. This is an important ingredient of leadership, otherwise,we will soon get to know that no condition is permanent.
