In 2007, the regulation governing postgraduate studies were reviewed and approved by the university senate. The schedule of fees as contained in the maiden  edition of the post graduate school prospectus aimed at providing an up-to-date information to prospecting graduate students (2007/2008 session) on programmes available in the university is as follows:

-School fee            = 85,000
-Acceptance          = 15,000
-Clearance            =7000
-Result verification =5000
-Others                 =3000+

    After repeated assurances from the post graduate school  that there is no other major fee/payment required for the 18 months program (3 semester starting from mid 2008), we were shocked to receive a circular during second semester examination asking us to pay another school fee of 85,000 under their 'new' yearly school fee payment  with the new students.
     The postgraduate executive tried to reason with the PG school hoping to make them understand that over 60% of the postgraduate students are not in paid employment and cannot afford to pay such since it was not in the picture from the beginning, this reason seems to hold no water as the PG school have maintained their position without any effort to reach a compromise.
      After the second semester examination, we decided to attend to our projects so as to meet up with September 2010 external defense date. In July, 2010, we received another circular, this time, we were told that for us to partake in the external defense, we need to pay another 125,000 and failure to do so meant paying another 85,000 for the third time should we decide to defend next year.
     While trying to process this, we checked with some schools to see whether it was an NUC directive. We were shocked to discover that FUTO PG Circular on External Defense Fee was just an isolated case, as there was no any such directive/information on the NUC website.
    How do we raise 210,000 (85,000+ 125,000) within this  short notice?.This is injustice. We are trapped and cannot make sense of this outrageous external defense fee or another 85,000 which was not stated at the beginning. This is especially difficult when 2005/06 and 2006/07 students cannot remember paying up to 10,000 for the same defense.
     At the moment, we spend 15,000 monthly on the average (for over 20 months) to run this program plus project fee and accommodation for two years which sums up to 500,000+ and financially incapacitated to manage this burden. How can FUTO PG school justify this? This shows the level of organization and administration in the said school.
      We call on the FG through NUC and Nigerians of goodwill to save us, by prevailing on the school authority to remove the outrageous external defense fee. The school should please always inform new students, all they are expected to pay so that they don't get trapped and regret starting the program at all. We count on your prompt intervention and speedy resolution of this injustice in this era of National and Institutional Rebranding,Nigeria must be great.
