An open letter to the Chairman INEC, Prof A.M. Jega

Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for accepting to take on such a difficult job as the chairmanship of INEC at this crucial time in Nigeria's history. In October, the PDP government of today will celebrate 50 years of Nigeria's independence. For many Nigerians, however, there is not much to celebrate because of the prevailing difficult socioeconomic conditions in our nation: economic depression, pervasive poverty, collapsed infrastructure, insecurity, among others.
Daily living is a grating grind in the country for over 90% of the population because of the paucity of basic amenities and necessities of life: water, power, good roads, jobs, security. Many politicians and their friends, however,  live in mind-boggling luxury in sharp contrast to the pervasive and pronounced poverty in the populace. The economy is impacted negatively because members of the ruling political class, 1% or less of the population, allocate to themselves a disproportionate and unsustainable fraction of public resources.
The limited opportunities available for decent living for the general population is directly responsible for the flight of approximately 20 million Nigerians elsewhere in search of better living conditions.
In spite of the hardship they experienced at home before their departure for foreign lands, many Diasporan Nigerians still continue to actively support the slumping economy at home with remittances of about 10 billion US dollars a year, an amount that is equal in magnitude to one-third of the current Federal Government budget! Without the remittances, the economy will be in a far worse shape.
Why then should these citizens of Nigeria who through their sacrificial remittances home prop up the national economy be denied the right to vote in the coming elections? This is certainly inexcusable 50 years after independence!
I urge you to remedy this situation without delay. Any election without the participation of 20 million Diasporan Nigerians cannot but be a sham election and will not receive the recognition of the international community and fair-minded Nigerian citizens. Also at this juncture in our national life, with the enormous challenges we face, the plan for the country by a presidential candidate, for example, should be subjected to the rigorous scrutiny of the entire Nigerian people, at home and abroad, for their acceptance or rejection of that plan through the voting process. True democracy demands this!
Kindly use your good offices to enable all eligible Nigerians to have the opportunity to choose their next president and other relevant government officials in the 2011 elections. Please do not tarnish your outstanding and well deserved reputation by supervising a charade. Thank you very much. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Sincerely,

Prince Abitunde Taiwo
