Death Penalty: Panacea against Corruption

advertisement

It is an established fact that corruption is a menace to the society. It retards the progress of a Nation and sends a bad impression to the outside world about it, which sometimes leads to isolation among committee of Nations.

In the case of our dear Nation Nigeria, it is pathetic considering the way Nigerians are treated abroad with contempt. According to the Transparency International, Nigeria is one of the most corrupt Nation in the world. This make others i.e outside world treat us with caution.

EFCC, the Commission given the mandate to deal with Economic and Financial Crimes in Nigeria has already asked for stricter penalties to deal with money laundering/corrupt practices in Nigeria.

Death penalty has been proposed by the Chairman of the EFCC, Mrs Farida Waziri to put the menace of corruption to rest in Nigeria.

Death sentence in my opinion will serve as deterrent to corrupt practices in Nigeria. Corruption must not be treated with kid gloves or else the Nation’s battered image will continue to dwindle.

Just last week a former Chief Judge of China was executed after the court found him guilty of corruption and if China a developed nation will treat corruption seriously then Nigeria a developing Nation should take it serious too.

In conclusion EFCC and other anti-graft agencies should do more about anti-graft campaign and the National Assembly on its part should expedite action on the anti-graft bill, pass it into law, for a stricter penalty against offenders.
