The Way Forward For Nigeria
Nigeria is a country blessed with both human and material resources but in the midst of plenty, there is none. There are agitations from different quarters on what to do to make Nigeria great and better. The Niger Delta is a case on its own, Bribery and corruption from different sphere of the government, Kidnapping, just to mention a few.
Few years back, the former Minister of Information, Mrs. Dora Akunyili introduced the culture of “rebranding” ourselves so as to create a better image to the International Communities but that is better imagined than being imbibed into the culture and minds of Nigerians. Kidnapping in the South East has become a lucrative business as the demand for ransoms are exceptionally whooping in order to release their captives. What of the power display by our lawmakers whose interest in their pockets forgetting the masses that ‘voted’ them into power? All these bothers on greed and corruption.
The agitation by the media to pass the FOI Bill, (Freedom of Information) has received a massive blow as it has been thrown out severally by the lawmakers. Perhaps our lawmakers do not want to nail themselves or the ‘classified information’ leak out to the public.
On and on the list can go but the most important thing now is what can be done to move forward and have our name (Nigeria) re-written in gold in the International Communities. It is necessary things are put in their right positions by:
- Retraining some of the public office holders in order for them to be mindful of the positions they are holding.
- Allowing the qualified personnel to handle some sensitive positions if not all positions of authority. This is the more reason Nigerians are clamouring for free and fair elections. When our votes count, a great leader will be better for it. One man as the president of Nigeria who is responsive and responsible can take us to the Promised Land.
- Making them accountable for their misdeed or mismanagement of public funds.
