Anti-Money Laundering Law a panacae in the fight against graft

advertisement

Money Laundering is any transaction or series of transactions undertaken to conceal or disguise the nature and source of funds that have been obtained from illegal activity. The main objective of the money launderer is to transform ‘dirty’ money into seemingly clean money or other assets in a way to leave as little trace as possible of the transformation. Examples of illegal activities that often involve money laundering are: drug trafficking; terrorism; smuggling; fraud; bribery; robbery; embezzlement; and illegal gambling.

Closely related to the issue of control is the issue of enforcement of whatever control mechanism in existence.

People tend to commit crimes if the chances of getting away with it are more than the chances of getting caught. Corruption is an offence, which confers monetary and other forms of benefits and is therefore tempting. The major deterrent is the fear of reprisal, be it in the form of going to jail or loss of esteem or image. Where the possibility of reprisals is remote, then the temptation increases. This further explains why corruption is prevalent in societies where the law enforcement structures are weak. The effectiveness of the judicial process can also be effectively located here, In Nigeria .

The only arm of government that is saddled with the responsibility of making laws for the smooth governance is the National Assembly, it is base on this backdrop that the EFCC in its efforts to eradicate corruption is canvassing for this bill to be passed in to law so as to serve as a deterrent to this corrupt criminals.

At this juncture I urge every Nigerian who believes in the future of this country to support FARIDA WAZIRI, the lioness who is bringing sanity and integrity in our polity.
