Dear Editor,
Police Leadership not yet Uhuru
If one thinks of the recurring poor, inglorious, corrupt and other vices associated with Nigeria Police leadership; then we have not yet gotten the right Police in Nigeria. Whenever IGP is changed, the masses expected better attitudinal change; but that has never been.
When Ogbonna Onovo was appointed, there seemed a sigh of relief because of great expectations. He started with smoky statements which included that all those who are not entitled to Police details would have theirs withdrawn. It is a shame that the situation remains even worse under the present headship because there became upsurge in granting this facility to the highest bidders and friends of the Police leadership.
Take for instance; Police granted the former Governor of Delta State, Mr. James Ibori, retinue of Police details but still could not use the same personnel to apprehend him when he was declared wanted. Rather they aided his escape and today nobody is talking of disciplining the Police.
Many cases of kidnapping, threat to life, cultism, assassination, etc have been reported to Police but all we get are statements like “the Police shall get to the root of everything” but none ever positively materialized; where some did materialize, in most cases, Police ensure that people are framed.
Recently in Akwa Ibom one Paul lnyang was assassinated in a church and the Ogbonna Onovo travelled all the way from Abuja to pay official condolence visit to a man he never knew personally before and no known national context? At the end and in connivance with the Akwa Ibom Governor trumped up charges against a governorship aspirant, Senator James Udoedehe. Do they feel that the masses are deceived? Do they ever realize that bearing false witness is a sin against God and mankind and that those who support evil, such lives with them and their generation? In any case this is one case that would expose Police collaborations.
It is a shame that Police under their present leadership seem worse; availing selves as tools in the hands of highest bidders and bearing false witnesses.
