The evil side of Sex and its Remedy (4) By Dr. Lewis Akpogena

God’s perspective on abortion: What does God think about those who perform abortions? First, here is what God says about shedding human blood in general. ‘For your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting… whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man’ (Gen. 9:5-6). Concerning an innocent person, here is what God says. ‘Do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty’ (Ex.23:7). ‘Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person’ (Deut. 27:25, KJV). ‘But your eyes and your heart are intent only upon your own dishonest gain, and on shedding innocent blood’ (Jer. 22:17, NASB). ‘On your clothes men find the lifeblood of the innocent…Yet in spite of all this you say, “I am innocent; he is not angry with me.” But I will pass judgment on you because you say, “I have not sinned”’ (Jer. 2:34-35). Humanly speaking, who is more innocent than an unborn baby? The man or woman who takes human life in the womb is sinning against God, the giver of life. That is not a very wise thing to do. According to these verses, there are a large number of abortionists in the world who face a murder trial before God. Here are some additional biblical statements about those who shed innocent blood, especially the blood of children and babies. ‘They shed innocent blood, especially the blood of children and babies. ‘They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters… and the land was desecrated by their blood. They defiled themselves by what they did’ (Ps. 106:38-39). ‘There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood..’(Prov. 6:16-17). ‘This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Ammon, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. Because he ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to extend his borders’’’ (Amos 1:13). In the west today, there is considerable argument that a woman has some sort of legal ‘right’ over the baby in her body. Based on this upon the basis if this assumed that she has a ‘legal’ to end the life of her baby if she so chooses. It is upon the basis if this argument that abortion has been made legal in the United States and in many European countries. This argument is both legally and morally wrong. It simply reveals the sinfulness of the human heart.

First, the argument concerning the ‘legal’ right of the mother’ is consistent and legally wrong. Just because the baby is inside the mother’s womb does not give mother a legal right to end the life of another human being. She certainly does not have the right to kill another person who just happens to be in her presence. A baby in the womb is another person. Its nutrition comes from the mother, but the baby is not the mother and the mother is not the baby. They are separate persons. If a woman were to kill a baby in a crib in her living room she would be charge with murdered. In countries around the world, people do not have the legal right to kill other people just because they decide they want to end life of that person. If they do, they are charged with murder. Hence abortion is murder by its very definition. Second, abortion is morally wrong. Murder is murder, wherever the crime takes place. Location is not the issue. The taking of human life is the issue. If a person in a house, in a field, in a car, or wherever, the person who commits the crime is charged with murder by every civilized government in the world. How, then, can it be considered less than murder to take the life of a person who happens to be a mother’s womb? The crime of murder is much more serious and evil in the eyes of both God and humankind when a person takes the life of another who is innocent, harmless or helpless – which is the case of every baby in mother’s womb. The bible says, ‘You shall not murder’ (Ex. 20:13). Human governments say the same and charge those who purposefully take human life with the crime of murder. How, then, can willful abortion carried out by human beings be less than murder? This is a serious crime in the eyes of God. If God is holy and just, at some point he is going to demand a judgment on those who have performed abortions. For those girls who have submitted to abortion and those who have performed abortions, there is good news in the gospel of Christ. God will forgive this and all other sins when there is true repentance (Mt. 12:31a; 1Jn. 1:9). Jesus came for the very purpose of forgiving and saving sinners (Lk. 5:32).

What should Christians do about abortion? What is the solution to growth of abortion as a practice? There is probably no solution apart from the action of God’s people as recommend in the above discussion of pornography. If a nation’s government makes this practice legal, abortion will continue to grow. The only solution is for the people of God to rise up together and to demand that the government make laws against this evil practice. Since there is such a great difference of opinion on this subject among different groups, the whole people of God from all denominations must determine to come together as one body when they present their case to the government. Even this united front will probably not succeed without strong payer. God can work if this people will pray and act. But they must act with determination and with the utmost co-operation and unity. It took a lifetime of prayer and hard work before the efforts of William Wilberforce in England resulted in the legal abolition of human slavery, but God finally gave this man and his associates’ success.

Prostitution: prostitution is sometimes called the oldest profession in the world. Over three thousand years ago, a prostitute named Rahab made the front page in the history of God’s people (Joshua 2:2-21). Today, with the increase of poverty in Africa and with the decline of biblical values in relation to sex, prostitution is growing rapidly –especially in the cities. Although there have always been prostitutes, the current growth of this evil practice is based more on economics than on changing moral values. With no way to survive in a hostile urban environment the only things many girls can do to make money to pay for food, clothing and rent is to sell the use of their bodies for sex. Young girls come to the cities and are offered money, food clothing and housing by men who operate house of prostitution. Little do these young girls realize the horrible life that is before them? Prostitution is one of the more significant social evils of modernity in Nigeria. Through prostitution the moral, spiritual, social and physical lives of men and women are degraded to zero. The growth of prostitution has the potential to destroy young people in the present and their marriages in the future. Through prostitution, STDs in general and AIDS in particular, have become the scourge of the city and the scourge of Africa. It is an evil must be addressed.

Statistics alone do not communicate the personal tragedy in the life of each girl who has been trapped by this vicious form of selfish indulgence by men with money. If we recognize how prostitution usually comes about as a result of economic desperation to survive, we will get an important clue as to how to confront this evil in cities. The following true story will help us understand how girls into prostitution and how the love God and the commitment of his people can rescue them from it. Rebecca had an emotionally painful childhood. Her father and mother were divorced and her mother had remarried. There was a lot of tension in the home, Rebecca left home at the age of sixteen because she could not get along with her stepfather, stepbrothers and stepsisters, because she had no real brothers and sisters , she had to live alone after she left home . She was a high school drop out. She had no money, no possessions and no job skill. She had no one she could turn to for help. She turned to prostitution as ways to survive on her own. She began to make bit money from her ‘work’. During her years living from prostitution Rebecca experienced many ugly things at the hands of evil men. She hated her life, but she did well financially because the men who used her paid well. One night, after she had been in prostitution for three years, she had an experience which thoroughly frightened her. A man picked her up and took her for a ride in his car. He gave her a piece of fruit to eat. From that time until the next morning, she could remember nothing. She woke up the next morning in a strange old house in a forest far from town. There was no one in the house. She ran from the house in panic and followed a dirt road until she came to a main road and was able to get back to town. She realized that she had been drugged so that she could be used in a satanic ritual. She began to think about her life and realizes that her way of ‘survival’ might actually cost her life. But there was no one to turn for help.

Out of fear, she went to stay with another girl who also a prostitute. The other girl had been contacted on the street by some Christian girls in the city who went out on the street one night a week to share the love of God with the girls they met. The Christian girls often came to visit the girls they had befriended. One day, some of the Christian girls came to visit the girl Rebecca was living with and Rebecca met them. The Christian girls began to share with Rebecca how God loved her and wanted to forgive her sin and give her a new life. A few days later, the Christian were visiting some other girls in the same ‘work’ who were living nearby. Rebecca heard about it and went over to hear more of what the Christian girls had to say. At the end of the discussion, Rebecca asked the Christian girls how she could find God’s forgiveness in her own life. The eagerness on her face was very evidence. The Christian girls operated a vocational training and rehabilitation centre in the city. Rebecca asked if she could join the training. She realized it was the only way out of the life which she was trapped. She worked hard at the training, but years of living in harsh and difficult surroundings made it hard for her to get along with other people. She was stubborn, hardened and hot-tempered.
